Multicultural recipe

What ingredients are needed to become a multicultural society?
Restaurants from all over the world, news from all over the world, internet connection for everyone, multilinguism, multicultural policies, international schools, NGOs? Are those ingredients necessary? Are they enough?
What else do we need to build a multicultural society? Is that desirable? Do you know any multicultural society? How does it work?
What does "multicultural society" mean to you?

  2. Above all, I think we need tolerance, respect for every singular culture and a new hierarchy of values.
Nowadays, it is a commonplace to talk about economically powerful nations or nations that seek to be dominant at a global sphere. Money and power are at the top of the hierarchy of values. A country is not defined by its culture but by the place it occupies in the map of power.
This often leads to the depreciation of economically poor countries.
In my opinion, people must redirect their attention to other values than the pure economic ones. Only after reaching a new platform of understanding that is not supported by money and numbers we can move on to the multicultural society.

  3. I second Daniel.

Add to the new hierarchy of values the 'interaction' or what may be known as a 'melting pot' for all these diverse cultures into one cosmopolitan whole. I can think of Alexandria during the first half of the twentieth century, where communities from Greece, Italy, Malta, North Africa, along with the Egyptian Copts and Jews.

In this example, Alexandria was a multi-cultural hub in the Mediterranean region. The Alexandrian multi-cultural example did not delve into what I call 'ghetto-making' (unlike other big cities, New York is a prime example). Such high level of tolerance will eventually lead to peace and co-existence, much needed in our world nowadays!
